MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Mexico plans to install X-ray inspection equipment at the Nuevo Laredo border crossing _ next to Laredo, Texas _ that can see hidden compartments in vehicles where drugs may be carried.

The move, which Mexican authorities announced Saturday, follows a rise in that area of the border of drug seizures in the last two years.

The Mexican army and police will also increase the number of highway inspection checkpoints along a 100-mile stretch of highway on Mexico's side of the border from Nuevo Laredo to Ciudad Aleman, said Victor Torres, Tamaulipas state representative of the Attorney General's Office.

The X-ray equipment is to be installed in the coming months.
