Fort Wayne area jobless rate ticks up

November 19, 2018

More local people were working last month : and more people were unemployed : than in September, according to data released today by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The Fort Wayne MSA’s jobless rate was 3.2 percent in October, a 0.5 percentage point increase from September’s 2.7 percent unemployment.

Last month’s jobless rate was also higher than October 2017′s 2.8 percent. Experts say the most meaningful comparisons are made from one year to the next because of seasonal variations.

Until recently, Fort Wayne’s metropolitan statistical area has comprised Allen, Wells and Whitley counties. The data released today appears to be calculated using those boundaries.

The federal Office of Management and Budget issued a document in September that specified the local MSA now comprises only Allen and Whitley counties. That change doesn’t appear to be reflected in labor force data included in today’s state release, however.
