Veterans home steps up security due to ‘suspicious activity’
BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) — “Suspicious activity” has prompted officials to beef up security at the State of Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.
The Bennington Banner reports Bennington Sheriff Chad Schmidt announced a yearlong contract to provide security at the facility starting in September.
Veterans Home CEO Melissa Jackson says staff has witnessed increased activity in the parking lot and they wanted to have sheriff security present, especially at night.
Schmidt says officers will rotate overnight duties seven days a week and provide security on the grounds as well as the interior.
The Veterans Home will pay the Sheriff’s Department $55 per hour for the coverage.
Schmidt says they could eventually have one full-time officer at the Veterans Home depending on funding and the length of the contract.
