LINZ, Austria (AP) _ In a topsy-turvy second-round match, Romania’s Irina Spirlea defeated Anna Kournikova 6-0, 0-6, 6-1 Thursday in the $520,000 Generali Ladies tennis tournament.
The tournament was the first for Kournikova, ranked 13th in the world, since she pulled out of the U.S. Open with a stress fracture in her right foot.
Top-seeded Mary Pierce of France squeaked past Sylvia Plischke of Austria, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
In other matches, Czech qualifier Denisa Chladkova upset second-seeded Austria’s Barbara Schett 6-3,7-6 (7-4) and third-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France defeated Amanda Hopmans of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-2.
Tauziat plays fellow French player Sandrine Testud, who defeated Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic, 6-3,7-5.
