Democrats shouldn’t punish Gov. Northam
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam was brought up in a world where racism against blacks was rampant, and a time when a Medical School had no qualms about publishing racist pictures in their year book.
It may be debatable whether Gov. Northam was a racist when he was going to school 35 years ago, but what is not debatable — he did not continue on a racist path, as millions of our nation, including our president, still do. Gov. Northam in his career as an officer, doctor and politician, has taken the opposite path and became a fighter for democratic principles.
It should be obvious that our president’s administration and the Republican Party have become a “party for whites only,” and are trying to portray the Democrats as the party of minorities and Socialists — Republican leaders would cherish seeing a white Democratic governor being replaced by a Black Democratic governor in Virginia.
Democrats, especially Democrats from the black race, should not go after Gov. Northam. He probably would become the most anti-racist governor in the nation and would groom black Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax to be the next governor of Virginia when the Democrats will have more power in Washington, and be able to eliminate vote suppression laws.
And, just as important, Gov. Northam could become a symbol to help eliminate racism for those who were brought up in a world of white dominance and racism.
If we are to continue to becoming a true Democracy, then we must be a country with a government “of the People, by the People, and for all the People.
