PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., checked into a Philadelphia hospital on Saturday with chest pains, a hospital official said. Tests for heart trouble were negative.

Specter checked himself into Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, said hospital spokesman Jeffrey Baxt.

An electrocardiogram test was negative, he said, but the senior senator from Pennsylvania remained at the hospital overnight for observation.

Specter's family did not release any other details. Calls to Specter's offices were not immediately returned.
