Dow Falls 31 in Early Trading

January 6, 1998

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices are lower in light trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 31 points in today’s early going. Decliners on the New York Stock Exchange hold a 2-1 lead over advancers.

The Nasdaq Composite Index has lost seven points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index is down three points.

Analysts say stocks are facing a little weakness as the Santa Claus rally that helped the market last week, appears to be running its course.

Given those gains, the market is likely due for a bit of a breather.

Asian markets were mostly lower, as many Asian currencies fell against the dollar for a second straight day.

Bond prices are narrowly lower, but the yield on the benchmark, 30-year bond remains near the record low set yesterday.
