April 17, 2019

A Santa Fe woman is accused of abusing her 4-month-old niece in the midst of a physical altercation with her sister, according to a criminal complaint filed in Santa Fe County Magistrate Court on Monday.

Gina Harjo, 48, has been charged with one count of child abuse, not resulting in death or great bodily harm, and battery, the complaint said.

Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the Thunderbird Inn on Cerrillos Road in response to a call from someone stating they’d overheard a woman yell she was going to break someone’s arm in the apartment, Santa Fe police reported.

Upon arrival, police found a woman and her infant, who had redness and scratches along her chest, stomach and upper right leg, the complaint stated. When police questioned the mother about the incident, she said her sister, Harjo, had started a fight with her.

Harjo argued she was trying to protect the baby, police reported.

Both women appeared highly intoxicated during interrogation, according to the complaint.

Harjo was arrested Sunday and booked at the Santa Fe County jail, where she was being held Monday without bond.
