Investigators stumped on cause of fatal Mississippi fire

September 1, 2018

GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Investigators aren’t sure what caused a house fire that killed a young man and critically injured two others in the Mississippi Delta.

Deputy State Fire Marshal Quincy Newson tells The Delta Democrat-Times that the cause of the Aug. 16 fire has been ruled as undetermined.

Newson says the fire is “one of the worst” he’s seen recently. He says fire damage is so extensive that “there’s just nothing to work with” in determining why the fire started.

Newson says he doesn’t suspect any foul play.

Twenty-one-year-old Semaja Reed-Libbett died two days after he sustained extensive burn injuries.

Libbett’s grandparents, 68-year-old Shirley Ann Reed and 61-year-old Daryl Maxey, were last listed in critical condition at a hospital in Jackson.
