U.S. May Sell Ships, Arms to Egypt

February 6, 1998

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Pentagon is proposing to sell four frigates and 42 Harpoon anti-ship missiles to Egypt for $355 million.

The ships and missiles will bolster Egypt’s security for the Suez Canal and its shipping lanes in the Mediterranean Sea, the Pentagon said in an announcement Friday.

The proposed sale involves two Perry-class frigates and two Knox-class frigates, plus the Harpoon missiles and kits to upgrade 20 Standard missiles.

The sale would not affect the military balance in the Middle East, the Pentagon said.

Congress does not have to explicitly approve the sale but can take action to block it.
