Johnson Re-Signs With Devil Rays
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ Infielder Russ Johnson avoided arbitration Friday, signing two-year, $1.35 million contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Johnson, who hit .294 with four homers and 33 RBIs in 85 games last season, will earn $575,000 in 2002 and $775,000 in 2003.
The .273 career hitter led the Devil Rays with a .373 batting average with runners in scoring position in 2001. He also set career-highs in at-bats, runs, hits and RBIs while starting 32 games at second base, 26 at third base, two at shortstop and two as the designated hitter.
The deal leaves Tampa Bay with three unsigned players who are eligible for arbitration _ outfielder Randy Winn and pitchers Esteban Yan and Doug Creek.
