Ruvalcaba Beats Venancio in TKO
LAS VEGAS (AP) _ Rito Ruvalcaba scored a technical knockout over Peter Venancio in the second round of their title elimination bout Friday at The Orleans Hotel & Casino, earning him the right to fight for the WBO middleweight championship next year.
Ruvalcaba, ranked sixth by the WBA, knocked down Venancio, rated No. 5 by the WBA, three times _ twice in the second round and once in the first.
Ruvalcaba, 24, dropped Venancio with a right early in the second and then floored the dazed Brazilian with a glancing left hand, which prompted referee Joe Cortez to halt the fight at 2:36.
Ruvalcaba, of Tijuana, Mexico, improved to 20-2 with 17 knockouts. Venancio, 34, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, fell to 37-4-1 with 28 knockouts. Both fighters weighed the 160-pound limit.
In another bout, Juan Prado beat Douglas Villarreal in a unanimous 12-round decision to capture the vacant WBC FECARBOX lightweight title.
Prado, 23, of Mexico City, won by scores of 116-111, 118-110 and 119-108.
Prado, who weighed 134 1/2 pounds, improved to 14-1 with 10 knockouts.
Villarreal, 26, of Cartagena, fell to 24-4-1 with 24 knockouts. He weighed 134 1/2 pounds.
