Wash. Bank Robbery Suspect Killed
BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) _ Police searching for a bank robber shot and killed the suspect in a crowded department store cafe Tuesday.
The unidentified man was shot to death in a back hallway of the Nordstrom Grill, where he had been sitting after apparently changing his clothes in a bathroom, Bellevue Police spokeswoman Marcia Harnden said.
No one else was injured.
``When he sat down, he was very anxious looking, fidgeting,″ Patti Anderson, who was at the cafe, told KIRO-TV.
The restaurant is on the second floor of the upscale apparel store at Bellevue Square, a mall in the center of this city east of Seattle. Police were searching the mall after the robbery of a Bank of America branch a few blocks away.
Harnden said the man, in his early 20s, was sitting in the cafe when police arrived. He ran to the back hallway, where another officer was waiting.
He then allegedly pulled a gun. Two policemen fired four shots at the suspected robber, she said.
``I heard the cops yell, `Get down!′ and shots,″ said cook Levi Stearns. ``It was that quick.″
The dead man had an undisclosed amount of money in his backpack, Harnden said.
The Nordstrom store was closed for the rest of the day. The mall housing the department store remained open.
