Hiker impaled by stick after falling off trail on Mount Tom

HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) — A hiker required rescue this weekend after she fell off a trail at Mount Tom State Reservation in Holyoke and was impaled by a stick.

The Republican newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/2ckUMyL ) it took two hours for three firefighters, one police officer and two reservation employees to reach the victim after the initial call reporting her fall was placed around 1:15 p.m. Sunday.

Fire Capt. Anthony Cerruti says the woman suffered a puncture wound to her thigh and was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment. The woman couldn’t walk due to her injuries and was carried out in a basket.

Cerruti says the woman fell near the top of the T Bagg trail, which he described as tough and full of loose rocks. She was not identified.
