Herd to meet USF in Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa Dec. 20
HUNTINGTON - On Sunday, Marshall’s long-anticipated wait to find out its bowl destination came to an end.
As it turns out, the Thundering Herd will head to an area that it knows fairly well.
Marshall will head to Tampa, Fla., to take part in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, which will put the Herd against South Florida at 8 p.m. on Dec. 20 at Raymond James Stadium, Conference USA announced on Sunday afternoon.
The game will be televised by ESPN and is the only bowl game to be played on that date.
The contest also takes place in a large recruiting hotbed for the Herd, who features many players on its roster from Florida with several being from the Tampa area.
Marshall has taken part in the Tampa-based bowl game twice before, but the venue for those contests was Tropicana Field - the baseball home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
In 2011, Marshall defeated FIU - then a member of the Sun Belt Conference - by a score of 20-10 in the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl, marking the first bowl win of Marshall head coach Doc Holliday’s career.
In 2015, the Herd continued its hot streak in bowl games with a hard-fought 16-10 win over UConn in the St. Petersburg Bowl.
Holliday is 5-0 in bowl games as Marshall’s head coach and the Herd has won six consecutive bowl games overall. The Herd is 11-3 all-time in bowl games, which is the top percentage in all of college football.
