Berahino strikes as West Brom beats Southampton 1-0 in EPL
WEST BROMWICH, England (AP) — West Bromwich Albion continued its improved English Premier League form under new manager Tony Pulis on Saturday when Saido Berahino scored after only two minutes in a hard-fought 1-0 win against Southampton.
Victory extended its unbeaten run to five games in all competitions, in a sequence that has produced just one defeat in 11 games this year under Pulis. The team has climbed out of the relegation zone to a safe mid-table spot.
But for Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, it was a first away defeat in six Premier League games, ending a bid for a record run of five away wins, and saw his team fail to score for a third consecutive game as its challenge for a place in the Champions League fades.
“Yes, we are losing some confidence in creating chances and in scoring goals,” Koeman said. “But we are still in a good position in the league, and we will keep going. We tried to score, but there was a lot of time wasting today - and that is part of football.”
Berahino netted his 17th goal of the season after only 71 seconds when he latched on to the ball from a headed clearance and fired a firm left-foot shot beyond goalkeeper Fraser Forster from 15 meters.
