School closes after about 200 students, staff call out sick
METHUEN, Mass. (AP) — Officials say about 200 students and staff called out sick, forcing a northeastern Massachusetts school to close for a day.
Superintendent of Schools Judith Scannell announced Thursday afternoon that Timony Grammar School in Methuen will be closed Friday.
The Eagle-Tribune reports that more than 180 students and nearly two dozen staff members called out sick from the school on Thursday due to a stomach virus. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea.
Scannell says the closure in hopes of stopping the virus from spreading more and to allow crews to clean the school over the weekend. She says the virus doesn’t appear to be affecting other district buildings and that school will continue as planned in those buildings.
Methuen schools are scheduled for a half day Friday because of professional development activities.
