Several injured in barn fire, some calves killed
HOLLAND, Vt. (AP) — Firefighters in Vermont say fuel from a gas-powered water pump inside a barn ignited and caused a fire that caused several injuries and killed some calves.
The Caledonian Record reports one worker at the Champney farm in Holland suffered burns to his hands, face, and hair after trying to stop the fire Tuesday. Others suffered smoke inhalation working to get 163 calves and heifers out of the barn.
Kim Champney said the rest of the farm’s nearly 300 milking cows were safe in a larger, new barn.
The damage was contained to one section, which will have to be torn down.
The Champneys are the farmers who want to host a large wind turbine on their farm field.
