NEW YORK (AP) _ Yankees right fielder Raul Mondesi returned to the starting lineup Sunday for the first time since spending a night in the hospital after feeling short of breath.
``I think he was relieved yesterday when he had that final battery of tests and everything was fine,″ New York manager Joe Torre said.
Mondesi warmed up with the team before the game and looked comfortable in batting practice, driving several balls over the left-field fence. He batted sixth in the final game of a weekend series against the AL East rival Boston Red Sox.
Mondesi checked into a hospital Thursday night after feeling short of breath. He was released the next day after extensive tests were negative, but sat out the first two games against Boston.
The slugger went to Beth Israel North Hospital before Saturday’s game after experiencing pains in his chest shortly after rejoining the team. He returned to Yankee Stadium after a CT scan was negative and was available to play, but did not enter New York’s 9-8, 11-inning victory.
Mondesi, acquired from Toronto in a trade three weeks ago, was injured when he ran into the outfield wall trying to catch Omar Vizquel’s game-winning drive at Cleveland on July 12. He was diagnosed with a bruised sternum, chest and knees, and a stiff neck.
He had played since then, and homered in New York’s 6-5 win over Detroit on Thursday.
Mondesi entered Sunday’s game in a 2-for-25 slump, hitting .220 overall with 17 home runs and 52 RBIs. As a Yankee, he was batting .190 with two homers and seven RBIs in 42 at-bats.
