Police arrest man after standoff in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON — A 34-year-old Mount Vernon man was arrested early Monday morning after an hourslong standoff with police at a house in the 700 block of North First Street.

Police were called to the house about 10:42 p.m. Sunday, where they learned there had been a domestic dispute between the man and a woman at the house, according to a news release.

According to the woman, the man brandished a “machine gun” at herself and a boy, and threatened to kill them and anyone who approached the house, the release states.

The woman and the boy fled the house before police arrived, the release states.

Mount Vernon police, with assistance from State Patrol, the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office and Burlington police, surrounded the home and evacuated nearby houses, the release states.

A crisis negotiation team attempted to negotiate with the man for three hours before police were able to enter the home and arrest the man.
