Knee Sidelines Marlins’ Sheffield
MIAMI (AP) _ Florida Marlins slugger Gary Sheffield, bothered by a swollen left knee, was scratched from the starting lineup before Friday’s game against Milwaukee.
Sheffield pinch-hit in the seventh inning and struck out.
The Marlins’ right fielder hurt his knee trying to score on a flyout in the seventh inning of Thursday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. He collided with catcher Tyler Houston and landed hard on his knee.
Sheffield remained in the game but was unable to run at full speed Friday. His status is day to day.
``I’ll get treatment and get back out there as soon as I can,″ he said.
Sheffield was limited to 30 at-bats in spring training because of toe and back injuries, but he’s off to a fast start this week with a .625 batting average, a .786 on-base percentage, a slugging percentage of 1.500 and two home runs.
