Red Cross seeks ‘holiday heroes’ at Christmas Eve drives
CHARLESTON — The American Red Cross, which often experiences a seasonal decline in donations, is requesting the gift of life from eligible donors.
Though it’s Christmas Eve and many local residents have commenced their holiday vacations, the Red Cross is hosting several blood drives in the evening for those willing to step up as “holiday heroes.”
“The American Red Cross urgently needs blood donors to make an appointment now to give and help ensure patients can get the treatment they need at a moment’s notice,” the nonprofit said in a news release. “Emergencies don’t take a holiday.”
Blood donations will be taken the following drives throughout the area today. For more locations, visit red cross-blood.org to find a drive.
• 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Huntington Blood Donation Center, 1111 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Huntington.
• 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Parkersburg Blood Donation Center, 3210 Dudley Ave., Parkersburg, W.Va.
• 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Holiday Inn Express — Sternwheeler Room, 100 Civic Center Dr., Charleston.
• 8:30 a.m.-l p.m. Ashland Depot, 9915th St., Ashland.
According to the Red Cross, a seasonal decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors get busy with family gatherings and travel. In addition, severe winter weather can cause blood drive cancellations and negatively affect the blood supply.
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients, according to the nonprofit.
Donors can save time by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive.
Those who give blood now through Jan. 6 may also receive a special gift from the Red Cross, while supplies last. For more information, download the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit Red-CrossBlood.org or call 800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767).
