Permanent Continental Airlines Sign In Works At Former Meadowlands Arena
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ The operators of the Meadowlands sports complex are removing any doubts concerning the name of the arena where the Final Four will be played in two weeks.
A permanent Continental Airlines Arena name is being affixed to the outside of the building and should be completed by Wednesday, said Robert Castronovo, the general manager of the arena and Giants Stadium, which are both run by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.
Work on the permanent name started last week and the ``Continental Airlines″ portion in blue letters was completed by Monday.
The airline purchased the naming rights to what was formerly known as the Brendan Byrne Arena for $29 million in January. The name of Byrne, a former New Jersey governor, was taken off shortly after the deal was announced and a temporary banner was hung welcoming patrons to the Continental Airlines Arena.
Castronovo said there was an urgency to get the permanent sign in place before the Final Four, which will be played on March 30 and April 1.
``There was a delay producing the product and finalizing the contract, which we didn’t do until last week,″ Castronovo said.
