EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) _ Kobe's still single.

When the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship in June, Bryant said he intended to marry Vanessa Laine in the summer.

It didn't happen, but Bryant said Monday the marriage will take place during the upcoming season.

``We definitely have plans in the works, we have a date set,'' Bryant said a day before the Lakers begin practice for the upcoming season. ``We have a date set, it's during the season.''

Bryant smiled and shook his head when asked for the date.

``You'll know when I show up with a wedding band,'' he said.

About the offseason, Bryant said: ``It was quick, nice and fast, short and sweet.''

Bryant, who joined the Lakers after finishing high school in 1996 and turned 22 in August, said he prepared for the upcoming season just as he did during his previous offseasons, with an emphasis on shooting.

``Free throw shooting was something I wanted to improve on, shooting the basketball,'' he said. ``When I work out, I only know one gear.''

Bryant, a second-team All-NBA performer at guard last season, might also be used at forward this year.

``Defensively, I have two positions to worry about,'' he said. ``Last year, I got very comfortable chasing little guards.''
