Texas Robbery Victims: ‘We’ll Be Back’
NEW YORK (AP) _ A Texas couple who were robbed of more than $80,000 and tied up by a gunman in their room in the Plaza Hotel say they still think New York is a ″a fun place to be.″
Hal Pettigrew, 38, and his wife Mary, 39, of Arlington, Texas, were robbed by a man holding a .357 Magnum handgun who followed them into their room at the Plaza on Sunday night, according to police reports.
He tied them up with a lamp cord and made off with $75,000 in jewelry and $5,500 cash, police said.
″We like New York, it’s a fun place to be, a good place to do business,″ Pettigrew told radio station WCBS. ″Yeah, we’ll come back again, just be more careful.″
The Pettigrews, who were in New York on business, said they returned about 10 p.m. to their room in the landmark hotel, which is located near Fifth Avenue at the south end of Central Park in midtown Manhattan.
They said the gunman pushed in behind him, waving the gun. Using lamp cord and a belt, he bound the couple and took three rings, two watches, one necklace and one pendant.
The couple managed to untie themselves and call police after the robber fled.
Two months ago, a 29-year-old Seattle woman was blindfolded, raped and robbed of $220 at gunpoint at the Plaza by an intruder who sneaked up behind her and forced his way into her room.
