EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Two candidates for Rhode Island governor are slinging insults at each other.

Independent candidate Joe Trillo, a former Republican lawmaker, tells WPRO-AM on Tuesday that Republican Allan Fung is a chameleon and will do and say whatever he needs to get along. Trillo says Fung, who's mayor of Cranston, "stands for nothing."

Trillo's comments came after Fung appeared on the station earlier in the day and dubbed him "Good Old Trader Joe," saying Trillo "loves to cut deals with his pals up at the Statehouse." Fung said Trillo doesn't have what it takes to run for governor.

Republicans see Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo as vulnerable, and some see a three-way race with an independent candidate as a tougher road for the GOP.
