Mule Train Outruns Peacekeepers
PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (AP) _ A mule train eluded NATO-led peacekeepers in Kosovo despite being chased by soldiers and a helicopter, the alliance said Wednesday.
A German military patrol found the mules suspicious Tuesday after spotting three columns with seven animals each approaching Kosovo’s boundary from neighboring Macedonia.
Mules are often used to smuggle cigarettes and weapons across Kosovo’s rugged terrain.
Patrols were dispatched to the border. The mules, however, were too fast for the soldiers, said Maj. Steven Shappell, a spokesman for NATO-led peacekeepers.
When faced with the German peacekeepers, the mule train ``turned around and ran away,″ Shappell said, back the way they came.
