JACKSON TWP. — A prisoner at State Correctional Institution Dallas was arraigned Thursday on arson charges alleging he set fire to a prison cell. Matthew Lee Johnson, 24, of Braddock, is charged with arson, risking catastrophe, institutional vandalism and criminal mischief. According to state police, Johnson was being held in a cell in the prison’s restricted housing unit the evening of Sept. 5 when he intentionally set fire to clothing, towels, bed sheets and paper products in the cell. Correctional officers had to extricate Johnson from the cell before extinguishing the fire, according to police. Johnson, who is serving 3½ to seven years in prison for robbery in an Allegheny County case, was arraigned on the charges at central court Thursday morning. Johnson remains in custody at State Correctional Institution Frackville. — JAMES HALPIN
