Betty Fehl, 73, Tomah

July 31, 2018

Betty M. Fehl, 73, Tomah, died Saturday, July 28, 2018, at the Serenity House in Tomah.

She was born Nov. 27, 1944, the daughter of Gerrit Van Buren and Nellie Kikkert in Randolph. Betty married the love her life Robert Fehl on June 14, 1962.

Betty loved making people laugh. She loved writing poems and even published a book of them. Betty was also an accomplished painter. One of her favorite paintings was a mural in her church. Family was extremely important to her along with her extended family. She was always there to welcome in people. In California, a neighbor girl, Michelle, was not getting along with her parents, so Mom and Dad took her in to live with them. Mike’s and Billy’s friends would hang out at “Grandma Betty’s” and became known as “the Buds.” A Christmas tradition with “the Buds” or “Grand Buds” was a pickle in the tree and extra gift; many trees almost came down. Betty and Robert were very strong in their faith. When they lived in Las Vegas, they started a church together along with others.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Julie) Fehl of Houston, Texas; her daughter, Rhonda (Rob) Nelson of Tomah; three grandchildren, William Dykstra, Garrett Fehl and Lucas Fehl.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert; her parents, Gerrit and Nellie Van Buren; and a brother, Marvin Van Buren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Shudy officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 351 W. Jefferson St., Black River Falls, WI 54615.
