CLEVELAND (AP) _ Mike Boyd, this year's Mid-Continent Conference basketball coach of the year, was given a four-year contract extension by Cleveland State, the school announced Friday.
Boyd led the Vikings to a 22-6 record in his third year as head coach.
He took a struggling program and turned it around rapidly, going from 12-16 in his first year to 16-13 last year, and claiming the MCC regular-season championship this year.
KURIMOTOMACHI, Japan (AP) - Al Kelley and Seiichi Kanai fired 5-under-par 67s on Friday to share a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Fuji Electric Grandslam senior tournament.
Kelley had the lead to himself until he bogeyed the last hole.
One shot off the pace were Canadian Gary Cowan and Ichiro Teramoto.
Gary Player and Lee Trevino were among seven players at 70.
YOSHIICHO, Japan (AP) - Jet Ozaki increased his lead to two strokes in the Taylor Made KSB Open by shooting 5-under-par 67 on Friday for a two-round total of 135.
Todd Hamilton held to second place after a 68.
Saburo Fujiki also turned in a 68 for a 139.
American David Ishii shot a 72 and was tied at 141 with Hikaru Enomoto and Tsuyoshi Yoneyama.
HIGASHIMATSUYAMA, Japan (AP) - Kumiko Hiyoshi started with a birdie and ended with another Friday en route to a 4-under par 68 and a one-shot lead after the first round of the Kibun Ladies Classic.
Hiyoshi, winner of the Chiyoda Ladies two weeks ago, also birdied the fourth and 14th holes.
South Korea's Kim Man-soo and Nayoko Yoshikawa were tied for second place.
DENVER (AP) - WBA middleweight champion Reggie Johnson will fight eighth- ranked Jorge Castro in a title fight May 4 at McNichols Arena.
The bout will head a five-bout card.
Johnson will be making the third defense of the title he won April 22, 1992, when he beat Steve Collins.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Ak-Sar-Ben on April 28 will launch a schedule that includes 10 races with purses of $50,000 or more.
The majors events will be the $150,000 Ak-Sar-Ben Budweiser Breeders' Cup on June 19, the $100,000 Queen's Handicap July 25, the $125,000 Cornhusker Handicap July 31, the $100,000 Omaha Gold Cup Aug. 7 and the $200,000 Nebraska Breeders' Sweepstakes Aug. 9.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Saints signed two free agents Friday.
Wide receiver and kick return specialists Sammy Martin, a former LSU player who was released by Indianapolis at training camp last year, was added to the roster along with tackle Tom Backes, who played for Montreal of the World Football League in 1992.
Backes was a 10th round draft pick by Chicago in 1991 and spent that season on the Bears' practice squad.
