Dow Gains 27; Nasdaq Climbs 13

NEW YORK (AP) _ The summer season is winding down, and we’ll see whether investors have the desire to make any decisive trades ahead of Labor Day.

Stock prices are modestly higher in early trading. The Dow Jones industrial average is up 27 points in today’s early going. Advancing issues on the New York Stock Exchange hold an 8-7 lead over losers.

The Nasdaq Composite Index is ahead nearly 13 points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index is up nearly three points.

A variety of things are on investors’ minds today, including the debut of decimal trading among selected stocks on the New York and American exchanges.

The government reports that the personal savings rate dipped into negative territory for the first time since February, with spending outpacing income growth in July.

There were about $10 billion worth of mergers greeting investors as they headed to work this morning. VoiceStream Wireless is buying Powertel for about $5.9 billion in stock, in a deal that includes more than $1 billion worth of debt assumption.

There’s also word of consolidation in the chip sector. Applied Micro Circuits is buying MMC Networks for about $4.5 billion in stock.
