Children Injured in Bus-Truck Crash
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ A school bus carrying 43 pupils collided with a truck at a downtown intersection Friday. At least 12 children were injured but only one was admitted to a hospital.
Bus driver Robert Conway, 30, and a witness said the bus and a truck were both headed northbound when the truck, on the bus’s right side, tried to make a left turn.
Aboard the bus were 43 third- through fifth-graders from Clinton Elementary School, two teachers and the driver, said one of the teachers, Samella Potter.
The truck driver ″must have decided he needed to make a lefthand turn, and that’s just what he did, right in front of that school bus,″ said Marie Forker, a witness who was driving behind the truck. ″When it happened (the pupils’) heads just surged to the front.″
Conway said the bus was returning to Clinton Elementary after taking the children to see a play downtown.
The truck driver, Harry C. Myers, 19, of Pickerington, was cited for making an improper left turn.
The owner of the truck, Diewald and Pope Inc., a mechanical contractor, declined to comment.
Children’s Hospital spokeswoman Pam Barber said the hospital examined 12 pupils. Ten were treated and released, one was admitted in fair condition with a possible neck injury, and one was held for further examination. She said the children mostly complained of head and neck injuries.
