Replacement statue of Frederick Douglass installed

December 21, 2018

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A replacement statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass has been installed at the spot in Rochester where the original statue was vandalized last weekend.

Community leaders held a public ceremony Thursday afternoon to mark the installation of the new statue. It replaces a cast epoxy resin statue that was ripped from its base early Sunday morning.

Two students at St. John Fisher College in suburban Pittsford have been charged with damaging the original statue. They’ve both been suspended.

The statue is one of 13 installed at sites in Rochester that were significant during the years Douglass spent living in the city. The project commemorates the 200th anniversary of the abolitionist’s birth.

Douglass is buried in Rochester’s Mount Hope Cemetery.
