October 3, 2018

JASPER, Ind. -- Having won on Thursday (Sept. 27) against Boonville at Wabash Valley College, the Junior Aces soccer team advanced to the latter stages of the SIJHSC Tournament in Jasper on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Junior Aces didn’t disappoint, winning their doubleheader on Saturday over Washington Catholic and Forest Park to win the Southern Indiana Junior High Soccer Conference.

The first match of the day pitted the Junior Aces against Washington Catholic -- a match in which they exploded offensively en route to their second tournament victory.

Striking in just the second minute, Levi Beesley scored a goal to give the Junior Aces a 1-0 lead. Their relentless scoring would continue, with Shade Loudermilk adding a pair of goals in the fourth and seventh minutes, as well as Aiden Garwood and Beesley each adding a goal in the 12th and 23rd minutes to give Mount Carmel a 5-0 lead at the half -- for Garwood, the goal was the first of three in the game, giving him another hat trick.

Garwood’s latter two goals would come shortly after the break to give the Junior Aces a 7-0 lead. They allowed a goal in the 44th minute to bring about the 7-1 final against WC to advance to their final game against Forest Park.

The finale was much lower scoring, as it remained scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the game, and saw better defensive effort from the opposition. In the 13th minute Caleb Carwile scored the first goal of the game for the Junior Aces off an assist from Garwood. Garwood added a goal of his own in the 17th minute to give Mount Carmel a 2-0 lead heading into the half.

Following the break, Forest Park took some time, but eventually got on the board in the 47th minute to narrow the deficit to 2-1. The Junior Aces managed to put away any doubts of a comeback in the 59th minute, with Eli Bertram scoring on a penalty kick to give Mount Carmel a 3-1 lead that would prove to be the final.

Garwood ended the day with a total of five goals, an exceptional showing for the seventh grader who will return for the Junior Aces next season.

After ending their season in joyous fashion, they will have some key losses for next season, losing eighth graders Gavin Smith, Bertram, Jason Miller, Drew Glick, Carwile, Drake Colbert and Landon Lagow. They’ll return a host of players though, such as Garwood, Loudermilk, Preston Wright, Luke Hipsher, Brodies Eads, Trevor Hayden, Beesley, Malachi Crane and Quaid Kanipe next season, as they attempt to defend their SIJHSC title.
