Gov. Abbott, top lawmakers to make announcement on property tax reform Thursday, Jan. 31

On Thursday, the three top leaders of Texas state government are planning an announcement about legislative efforts to stop property tax escalation.

DESALINATION FIELD TRIP: At 9 a.m. the House Committee on Natural Resources will meet for an organizational hearing to hear invited testimony. The hearing will be held in E2.010 of the Capitol building’s extension. View the agenda here. Upon adjournment of the hearing, the committee will head to San Antonio for a tour of the city’s Water System Brackish Groundwater Desalination facility and Aquifer Storage and Recovery Project.

BUDGET HEARING: At 9 a.m. the Senate Committee on Finance will meet to hear invited and public testimony on the state budget. The hearing will be held in E1.036 (Finance Room) of the Capitol building’s extension. The committee will hear testimony on Article VII of the appropriations bill, concerning business and economic development. Government entities such as the Department of Transportation, the Department of Housing and Community Affairs, the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Workforce Commission will be discussed. CHILD SAFETY BRIEFING: At 9 a.m. Texans Care for Children will hold a legislative briefing on child safety and success. The briefing will take place in E2.002 (Legislative Conference Room) of the Capitol building’s extension. The briefing, titled “Keeping Kids Safe & Helping Them Succeed,” will discuss “hot policy topics” in community mental health services, foster care and juvenile justice. View the event here.

PROPERTY TAX NEWS: At 10 a.m., Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, House Speaker Dennis Bonnen and other lawmakers will hold a news conference about legislative efforts to stop property tax escalation at the Texas Capitol.
