Rutgers 40, Navy 0

September 26, 1992

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) _ Navy lost its third straight shutout Saturday as Craig Mitter ran for three touchdowns to lead Rutgers to a 40-0 win.

Rutgers (3-1) scored a pair of touchdowns in a 42-second span to take a 17-0 lead late in the first half. That was more than enough offense to beat punchless Navy, which committed five turnovers.

The Midshipmen (0-3) had previously lost to Virginia (53-0) and Boston College (28-0).

Rutgers was nursing a 3-0 lead when it got the ball at the Navy 35 after a 19-yard punt. Two plays later, Mitter ran for a 20-yard score with 1:29 left in the second quarter.

On Navy’s next possession, Jason Van Matre scrambled out of the pocket on third down and fumbled after being hit by Keif Bryant and Roger Jeffries. Linebacker Shawn Williams picked up the ball and went seven yards into the end zone.

Mitter had TD runs of 6 and 2 yards in the second half and quarterback Bryan Fortay scored from the 1 with 7:32 left. John Benestad kicked a 26-yard field goal to make it 40-0.

After Rutgers failed to move in its first two possessions, Fortay was replaced by Ray Lucas. Fortay returned in the third period after Lucas completed 10 of 13 passes for 141 yards to stake Rutgers to a 24-0 lead.

Because of injuries, Van Matre was Navy’s third different starting quarterback this year. He ended up leaving the game in the third quarter with a bruised hip. He was replaced by Steve Seoane, who injured his shoulder in the fourth quarter.
