MFAH acquires significant Medieval works of art

September 24, 2018

Some really old things are new at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Three newly-acquired and significant works of Medieval are now on view in the Law building: A 14th-century Hebrew codex known as “The Montefiore Mainz Mahzor”; a silver-gilt and enamel Spanish processional cross, circa 1400; and one of a handful of surviving architectural drawings for Rouen Cathedral, dated 1516.

Officials say these additions, along with significant and growing holdings of objects from Asia and the Islamic worlds, will enhance the museum’s ability to tell the story of pre-modern art.
