Maine drug treatment center closes over violations

July 9, 2019

ELLSWORTH, Maine (AP) — A Maine drug treatment center in Ellsworth has been shut down after failing to address multiple deficiencies cited by state regulators.

The Open Door Recovery Center, which closed Friday, had been under a conditional license since Dec. 31. But Maine health officials say the center didn’t make the changes needed to address deficiencies.

Failure to conduct employee background checks and incomplete patient records were among the deficiencies. Officials also cited the center for banning the use of medication-assisted treatment, which researchers consider the standard of care for opioid addiction.

Residents have been moved to other programs.

Open Door consultant Bob Worrell tells the Bangor Daily News he plans to resurrect the center and that it’s critical to the recovery community.
