Ex-policeman gets 5-year prison term in Arizona drug case

September 14, 2018

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A former police officer in Mexico has been sentenced to five years in an Arizona federal prison in a drug trafficking case.

Prosecutors say 33-year-old Omar Moreno-Miranda was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Tucson.

Moreno-Miranda pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to possess and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Federal authorities say an undercover officer was in contact with Moreno-Miranda to arrange the purchase of drugs as part of a multi-agency investigation.

At the time, Moreno-Miranda was an officer in the police department in Nogales, Sonora.

Authorities say Moreno-Miranda was arrested in May 2017 after driving to a Tucson-area hotel with 11 pounds of methamphetamine in a backpack inside the vehicle.
