Costello Wins Special Primary
BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) _ Jerry Costello won a special Democratic primary and will face Republican Robert Gaffner in August for the right to serve out the remaining months of the late Melvin Price’s term in Congress.
Costello, chairman of the St. Clair County Board, on Tuesday overwhelmed East St. Louis Alderman Clarence Ellis Sr., 18,259 votes to 2,062 in unofficial returns. Gaffner, who faced no opposition in the primary, got 5,155 votes.
Price, a Democrat, died of cancer April 22. He was 83 and had already announced he would not seek re-election after 44 years in Congress.
In March, Costello and Gaffner won their respective regular primaries in the race to succeed Price; they will face each other in the general election in November. Price’s term ends in January.
