Marshall women facing UTEP at C-USA tournament
HUNTINGTON — Marshall University is seeded sixth in the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Marshall (15-13, 9-6 conference) tied for fifth place in the final standings, but lost the tiebreaker to Old Dominion (20-9, 10-6) for the sixth seed. The Thundering Herd opens the tournament at 3 p.m. Wednesday against 11th-seeded UTEP (8-21, 5-11) in the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas
The Herd won its regular-season meeting with the Miners, 63-60, on Jan. 31 in El Paso, Texas.
For the second year in a row, 24 men’s and women’s teams will be playing 22 games on two courts simultaneously in the state-of-the-art Dallas Cowboys practice facility. The men’s schedule will be set following Saturday games and Marshall is also seeded sixth in that tournament.
Women’s regular season champion Rice (25-3, 16-0) claimed the top seed and a first-round bye. The Owls are ranked No. 24 in the nation.
No. 2 UAB (24-5, 12-4), No. 3 Middle Tennessee (20-9, 11-5) and No. 4 Western Kentucky (17-13, 11-5) also have earned byes into the Thursday quarterfinals.
