Root handed first central contract from England
LONDON (AP) — Joe Root has earned his first central contract from England as a reward for his impressive maiden season of international cricket.
The 22-year-old Root, who plays for his country in all formats, replaced Eoin Morgan in the list of 11 players handed 12-month contracts through to Sept. 30.
National selector Geoff Miller says on Tuesday it “reflects the important role Joe has played for England since making his international debut last year and will I’m sure continue to play across all formats.”
In 11 tests, Root has scored two centuries and three fifties, averaging more than 40.
Middle-order batsman Jonny Bairstow is the only regular in the squad that retained the Ashes this summer who hasn’t been given a central contract. England flies out for the return Ashes series on Wednesday.
