Amsterdam Takes ‘Doo’ Measure

April 4, 2000

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it.

In the latest attempt to rid the streets of the Dutch capital of dog excrement, city officials are offering to pay people $4.30 an hour to collect dog droppings in their neighborhoods, a spokesman said Tuesday.

There is an ongoing debate about how to solve the messy problem in the Netherlands, where the population of nearly 16 million owns 1.4 million dogs and 2.5 million cats.

Earlier initiatives have included pooper scooper laws and cleanup stations, equipped with plastic bag dispensers and garbage cans.
