Firefighter injured in fire truck accident
A Scalp Level firefighter was treated at a local hospital and released after a fire truck crashed on its way to a fire Friday morning.
Scalp Level Fire Chief Mike Horvath said the Spartan ladder truck was responding to an oven fire along Mill Street in Hollsopple.
The truck was traveling south on Seanor Road in the village of Seanor.
Horvath said the truck was passing through an underpass as another vehicle was coming through.
He said the other motorist backed up when they saw the truck coming.
The fire truck avoided the other vehicle but hit a bridge support and guardrail.
A female firefighter was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown for what Horvath described as minor injuries.
He said the fire department is waiting for insurance adjusters to provide a damage estimate.
“I couldn’t even give you a rough estimate at this time,” he said Friday.
Horvath said the ladder truck is the first truck out for calls in the community.
“In the rural setting we always take our engine because it carries more water,” he said.
The department has had the truck, which features a 75-foot ladder, for 12 years.
State police are investigating. They did not release a report Friday. The electrical fire was out by the time officials arrived on the scene.
