Route 1 bridge replacement in Stamford/Darien starts next month
Work will be begin in January on the replacement of the Route 1 bridge over the Noroton River on the Darien and Stamford.
The $9.5 million project will be one in four phases. The contract with New England Infrastructure of Hudson, Mass. calls for the work to be finished by May 1, 2021.
First built over a century ago, the Route 1 bridge was rebuilt by the state in 1957, according to state Department of Transportation records. Now, state transportation officials have said that natural “scouring” -- removal of rock and sediment by water flowing under a bridge -- has exposed the load-bearing parts of the span.
The bridge carries US Route 1 (East Main Street) over the Noroton River at the city/town line of Stamford and Darien.
DOT said in a release the bridge replacement consists of a new single span superstructure composed of prestressed beams with a concrete deck on new pile supported footings and abutments. The existing profile of U.S. Route 1 will be raised approximately 2.5-feet at the bridge to meet the minimum hydraulic opening requirements. The horizontal alignment will be similar to the existing.
The new bridge will feature a newly constructed roadway section consisting of four 11-foot travel lanes (two in each direction), one 11-feet left turn lane, two 5-foot shoulders, and sidewalks of varying width on each side of the roadway.
Work will be performed in 4 stages:
1. A temporary bridge will be installed to the north during Stage 1. The temporary bridge will have two 12-foot lanes and a 5-foot sidewalk to the north.
2. One lane of traffic in each direction will be supported on the temporary bridge while the existing bridge is cut and prepared to provide a third lane of traffic.
3.Two lanes of eastbound traffic will be supported on the temporary bridge, and one lane of westbound traffic will be supported along the construction zone of the existing bridge while the southern portion of the new bridge is constructed
4. The westbound lane will shift to the newly constructed portion of the new bridge while the northern portion is built.
Plans call for Brookside Drive to closed to U.S. Route 1 during all stages of construction. Residents will be redirected to Anthony Lane and Hillside Avenue during this period.
Traffic control personnel, signing patterns, and shifts of travel lanes will be used throughout the entire project in all stages to guide motorists through the work zone.
