India target triple crown at World T20 final

April 5, 2014

MIRPUR, Bangladesh (AP) — Five things to know about the Indian team that has made Sunday’s World Twenty20 final against Sri Lanka:

CAPTAIN’S CHARM: India is in line to hold all three ICC titles at the same time under captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. India won the 2011 World Cup at home and the 2013 Champions Trophy in England.

SECOND STRIKE: This is only the second time that India reached the knockouts at the World Twenty20. India won the inaugural edition in 2007 but failed to get past the league stage in the remaining three tournaments despite the players’ experience in the cash-rich and high-profile Indian Premier League that sees top players from around the world in action.

RAMPANT KOHLI: Virat Kohli, who is known as one of the best batsmen in the world and has been compared back home with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, goes into the final as the highest run-scorer with 242 runs. His best score in the tournament has been an unbeaten 72 against South Africa in the semifinals in which he dominated the Dale Steyn-led attack.

SPIN TRICKS: Indian spinners have proved themselves to be match-winners on pitches aiding turn, justifying captain Dhoni’s decision to play three slow bowlers in the tournament. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is the most successful Indian bowler with 10 wickets while legspinner Amit Mishra has grabbed nine and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja five.

IPL PRESSURE: The Indian team could help administrators back home, who have been embarrassed with allegations of spot-fixing in the IPL.
