A’s sweep Indians...Royals top Cards... Rangers slip past Mariners
CLEVELAND (AP) _ Frankie Montas pitched six scoreless innings and Mark Canha homered and drove in three runs as the Oakland Athletics extended their winning streak to six with a 7-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. The A’s swept the three-game series and reached the .500 mark for the first time since April 26.
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Brad Keller pitched seven-plus innings of two-hit baseball, Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer and the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 in the first game of a doubleheader. Severe storms around St. Louis forced Tuesday night’s game to be postponed and created the day-night twinbill. Keller snapped a six-start winless streak.
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) _Hunter Pence homered, Adrian Sampson had another impressive long outing for a victory after not starting, and the Texas Rangers beat the slumping Seattle Mariners 2-1. Texas completed a three-game series sweep. The Mariners have lost 27 of 37 games since starting the season 13-2. Sampson went 5 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run after the Rangers used a reliever to start the game.
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ National League MVP Christian Yelich (YEH’-lihch) has been scratched from Milwaukee’s lineup against Cincinnati for a second consecutive day because of back spasms. He missed parts of seven games this season because of back problems and also missed time last season. Manager Craig Counsell described the problems as “short-term injuries” rather than chronic.
BALTIMORE (AP) _The Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder Keon Broxton from the New York Mets for $500,000 international bonus pool money. Broxton was batting .143 with New York in 34 games with no homers and two RBIs. In five years with Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and the Mets, Broxton has a .216 average with 33 homers and 81 RBIs.
