Jayce Gould growing as Cabell Midland QB
At Cabell Midland, 12 attempts for 168 yards usually indicates a strong performance by a running back, but the Knights appear to be a threat via the air this high school football season.
Jayce Gould, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior, took over at quarterback, replacing graduated standout Jovaun Light, who has gone on to West Virginia State University to play basketball. Gould’s debut was Aug. 25 against St. Albans and he completed 6 of 12 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Gould hit four different receivers and three caught touchdown passes.
“Jayce has grown a lot,” Cabell Midland coach Luke Salmons said. “He’s done a good job. Quarterback is a hard position to play, especially for a 16-or 17-year-old, but he’s getting better every week.”
Gould is talented enough to help prevent defenses from keying on all-state tailback Ivan Vaughn.
“He has to improve on some things, but all of us do, and he will,” Salmons said. “He has a really good arm, quick feet and he’s smart.”
If the Knights, who beat Parkersburg 40-20 on Friday, can effectively throw along with their power running game, their offense could take them a long way in Class AAA.

NOT AS BAD AS IT APPEARED: Green clobbered Hannan 86-14 Friday in high school football, but the Bobcats didn’t want such a lopsided score.

Hannan coach Kellie Thomas asked her players if they wanted to accept Newsome’s offer, but they declined and opted to play the full game, seeing it as an opportunity to improve and show they had no quit in them.
