New England students gather for civil rights event
BOSTON (AP) — Students and teachers from dozens of New England schools will gather for a civil rights event featuring an address from one of the Little Rock Nine.
Ernest Green will speak at Thursday’s Youth Congress in Boston, an event sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League.
Green was one of nine students in Little Rock, Ark., who tested the strength of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that said segregated schools were unconstitutional.
Federal soldiers escorted the black students into an all-white high school in 1957, marking a key moment in the civil rights movement.
Congressman Joseph Kennedy III is scheduled to introduce Green to students who are coming from Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
Students also will attend workshops on combating bullying and cyberbullying.
