June 8, 1988

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) _ The name of former Gov. George C. Wallace resurfaced in state politics as his son-in-law won a Democratic primary nomination to a seat on the Alabama Supreme Court.

Circuit Judge Mark Kennedy, 36, of Montgomery, the husband of Wallace’s daughter Peggy Sue, outpolled Anniston lawyer A.W. Bolt on Tuesday for the Democratic nomination to the court.

Kennedy is favored over GOP nominee Robert Maxwell.

Wallace, who retired from politics in January 1987 after four terms as governor, saw his son, George Jr., win the state treasurer’s post in 1986.

A longtime Wallace ally, Associate Supreme Court Justice Henry Steagall, also won a Democratic nomination to the high court. He was Wallace’s state finance director when the governor appointed him to the bench in 1986.

A third Wallace appointee, Associate Supreme Court Justice Gorman Houston, lost a bid for chief justice to Tallassee lawyer E.C. ″Sonny″ Hornsby in the Democratic primary.
